It is 2022, and this is my first foray into the Royal Diaries. I spent a substantial portion of the '90s reveling grimly in the bitter fates of Dear America's mill girls and Dust Bowl sufferers, but the Royal Diaries I refused.
Like, dang man, you're like almost thirty and she's literally half your age, and is going through puberty, so can you refrain from flashing her and drunk kissing her in the darkness? That's literally sexual harrassment, not romantic.
Something that makes this so successful is that Cleopatra is a brick. She is a steely-eyed seer and doer. She knows her older sister is frankly evil and she knows her second older sister is pretty and useless and probably selfish enough to do as much damage as the evil one, and she knows (but increasingly learns more concretely) that her father is weak and a drunk.

I usually like Kristiana Gregory's work, but this one felt like either a very early work, or a very rushed effort, or both.

I must admit, I was surprised to see how graphic a few of the illustrations were; for example, the murdered Julius Caesar lies bloody while a senator knees nearby and throws up; a woman throws a slop jar that is clearly filled with pee and turds out of a window (did they really do that in Egypt??).
